Agios Stefanos, Three Lakes, Avlaki - North East Corfu

Duration:
3 - 4hrs

Rating: Moderate

The north-eastern region of Corfu, an island noted for the outstanding beauty and variety of its scenery, is set apart by the harmony of its landscape, a perfect marriage of mountain and sea, forest and olive grove. It is thought by many to be one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean, and is already home to some of the most desirable properties in Greece. No wonder, then, that it is now one of the most sought-after areas.
The walk begins from the Bay of Agios Stefanos, a small fishing harbor popular for private yachts , on a path along the coast that will take you from one small bay to the next, passing through some of the most picturesque coastal parts of the island.

In some parts, the path diverts, cutting through the fields and the olive forest growing by the sea, or meets the inner roads of the villages in between. During the walk, you will enjoy views of the coast, the sea and the opposite coast of Albania, lying less than 2 miles away, the town of Agioi Saranda.
From our coastal walk we descend into one of the best sandy beaches in
Corfu, . Avlaki is one of many particularly lovely bays in this area, but is unique in that half its area is protected from development being Forestry Commission land.
One of the two headlands that embrace the graceful curve of the bay is covered in thick undergrowth, a fragrant blend of shrubs and herbs that shelters wild flowers and wildlife of all kinds. Sea eagles soar over the bay and sea-lilies grow at the very edge of the white beach, with its smooth, egg-shaped pebbles and clear, clean water.
Yet, with all its advantages, Avlaki is never crowded, and remains virtually unknown, even to the majority of the inhabitants of Corfu itself.
This is a public beach where you will have free time (approximately 1.5 hours) to relax under the sun and/or swim. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for rent at the beach on a first availability basis. There is a beach taverna nearby for refreshments or a lunch at your own expense. (Your bus will be waiting for you to return to the resort, if your tour includes transport.)

Equipment:
You will require walking boots and walking socks for support and comfort while walking. It is advisable to wear light long sleeve shirts and light trousers in addition to a sun hat, sun cream sunglasses. You should bring a rucksack, as it will be necessary to carry your lunch, personal items and at least one litres of water.

Food:
You will not need to bring a large amount of food, however, certainly bring some. This is the sort of walk where you might bring some snacks and fruit. There is a shop on route and we will finish at a beach side tavern. The best rule of thumb is always to come away from a walk with some food spare.
